Jack M. Peterson died peacefully in his home April 12, 2002.There will be a 1 p.m. celebration of his life on Tuesday April 16, 2002, at First Lutheran and internment will be at the First Lutheran Memorial Garden.
He was born November 30, 1923 in Norge, Va. He was the middle of three sons born to Andrew and Marie Petersen.
After Pearl Harbor, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps and became a P-51 Mustang fighter pilot. He served in Italy, flying missions over Germany, France, and the Balkans. For his 75th birthday Jack was able to pilot a P-51 again in Florida.
After the war he returned home and attended the College of William and Mary, where he earned his bachelors degree in Economics. During that same period he married his wife, Deloris. They had 54 years together.
He started working for Link Aviation as a field representative. In 1953 he started working for Western Electric and his job took him all over the world. He worked in Texas, New Jersey, Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Korea, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Germany. For much of this time he was based in Greensboro.
After his retirement in 1987 he spent his time doing the things he loved - reading, fishing, gardening, church work, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his older brother, Louis Petersen.
He is survived by his wife, Deloris Peterson, of Greensboro; his brother, Herbert Peterson of Chesterfield, Va.; four children, John Peterson (and Ann) of Chesapeake, Va. and Sue, David, and Kathy Peterson of Greensboro. He also had four loving grandchildren, Jason Peterson of Batavia, Ill., Michael Peterson of Burnsville and Jacqueline and Juliann Peterson of Chesapeake, Va.; a loving dog of 14 years, Black Jack; and numerous family and friends.
The family will receive friends at the home Monday April 15, 2002 from 7 to 9 p.m.
