In 1978 my mother and I visited Grundfoer, the village where she was born and where her father had been a taylor apprentice. His mother's brother, Hans Benedict Wollenberg, a blacksmith, had also lived there with his family.
When we went to the cemetery where the family had been buried, we noticed an older lady raking around the gravesites and I asked her if she might have known anyone named Wollenberg. She told us that they had lived right next door to where she grew up, she recalled how Caroline Wollenberg would hold her coffee cup in a very particular way. Hans Wollenberg was a blacksmith as was her father.she said that he was known to be a drunkard and one day at Christmas time he had decided that he wanted to go to Aarhus to give his three grandchildren each 1 Krone for Christmas. He had borrowed the three kroner from her father and gone to town, but had not returned.
A couple of days later his body was found in the harbor in Aarhus, apparently he had fallen in the harbor and drowned. He never made it to see his grandchildren, and it was speculated that he had spent the money to buy liquor and in drunken stupor had fallen into the harbor, or perhaps regretted not giving the money to his grandchildren as intended.
