- Obituary”
Born Hans Mortensen in Hvilsted, Hads, Århus, Denmark, he anglicized his name to Hans Martinson after arriving in the USA. He was baptized on April 8, 1844 in Hvilsted.
He left Denmark with his younger brother Ole on about May 12, 1870. They passed through Hamburg, Germany on the way from Jutland. This caused them to be listed as German nationals when they arrived in Liverpool. They sailed on the Colorado passing through Queenstown, Ireland and then arrived in New York City on May 31, 1870. From there they traveled to San Francisco to see their older brother Jens Peter who had immigrated there in 1868.
After moving to the USA, he lived in Alpine, California where he worked as a farmer. On August 4, 1879 he became a naturalized US citizen and was registered to vote in Alpine.
Later he lived in Carson City and Gardnerville, Nevada. For the last part of his life he lived in Portland, Oregon where he worked as a carpenter.

Finley & Son, Montgomery and Fifth streets. Friends invited. Incineration at Portland Crematorium. Carson City and Gardenwill (sic), Nev., papers please copy.
Morning Oregonian; Date: 01-15-1913
*There is no place called Gardenwill in Nevada. Gardnerville seems most likely, where The Record-Courier would have been the local newspaper at the time. Gardnerville is close to Carson City.
